Carl G. Amrhein

 

Dr. Amrhein is currently in his second term as Provost and Vice President (Academic) at the University of Alberta. Dr. Amrhein came to the University of Alberta in 2003 following his 17 years at the University of Toronto, initially as Assistant Professor of Geography, then as Chair of the Department of Geography and Graduate Program in Planning from 1993 to 1997, and finally as Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Science from 1997 to 2003.

The Provost is the senior Vice-President for the University and collaborates with the President in making policy on administrative and academic matters that affect the university as a whole. As chief academic officer, and the universities' second ranking officer, the Provost leads the team of vice presidents to ensure that portfolios and goals are aligned toward achievement of the university’s vision. Academic leadership and overall institutional planning are the Provost's responsibility. The Provost liaises with government and industry regarding academic programs and their funding, and coordinates the university’s international relations. In the absence of the President the Provost is acting President.

Dr. Amrhein holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Geography from Pennsylvania State University (1978) and a Ph.D. in Geography from State University of New York at Buffalo (1984) with research interest in economic geography, labour markets, decision theory, migration, and quantitative methods. He also attended the Institute for Education Management at Harvard University Graduate School of Education.

Throughout his career, Dr. Amrhein has received many honours and awards. Among his many honours are the Ami de la Francophonie Award and the German-Canadian Friendship Award. Dr. Amrhein has served and continues to serve on many committees and boards. He currently is a member of Fulbright Canada: Foundation for Educational Exchange Between Canada and the United States of America, National Statistics Council: Statistics Canada, Alberta’s Post-Secondary Application System Executive Council, and director for the German-Canadian Centre for Innovation and Research. University of Alberta’s memberships include the China Institute and the Kule Institute for Advanced Studies: Administrative Board.
